Dedication

In memory of my grandmother, Valentina

I dedicate The Halo Effect in the Home that took place on the 11th of September 2026 to my grandmother, Valentina, whose life was marked by sorrow and violence at the hands of her husband.

She was denied the things every person should be entitled to in their own home: bodily autonomy, a sense of identity, self-worth, freedom and safety. The place that should have been her refuge became the most dangerous place in her life.

She lived in a community where these things were hidden and rarely spoken about, despite the fact that people knew what was happening. And yet, no one came to her rescue.

I have never known my grandmother in good health. The effects of what she endured stayed with her throughout her life. But despite everything she suffered, she had the purest heart I have ever known.

She was gentle, loving and kind. Her suffering never took away her capacity to love, and that is something I will always carry with me.

This event is dedicated to her — and to all those whose pain remained unseen, whose voices were not heard, and who were left to endure in silence.

May we do better for those who come after us.

May we learn to recognise what is hidden behind closed doors.

And may no one ever again be made to feel that they have to face violence alone.

For Valentina, with love.
